Instructions

1. Place your acrylic sheet on a flat surface. If necessary, prevent the acrylic sheet from moving by securing it lightly with a vice. Do not tighten the vice too much, as you do not want to crack the acrylic.

2. Draw a line on the acrylic sheet at the edge of the area to be removed, using a marker. The area to be removed should be hanging off the table.

3. Use a coping saw to cut along the line. Do not twist off the excess acrylic. Wait until it comes free.

4. Discard the excess acrylic. Polish the cut edge of the acrylic sheet with the emery cloth.

Tips & Warnings

1.If cutting a complex pattern, release the vice and gradually move the edge of the acrylic sheet off the table so as to expose the acrylic sheet to the blade of the coping saw. Reset the vice in each new position.

2. Do not use a circular saw to cut acrylic sheet. Circular saws generate too much heat and will cause the acrylic to melt or burn.

It is also available in various thicknesses. Acrylic display is extremely strong and can be used where glass perhaps can’t for safety reasons. It is also lightweight when compared to glass.

Acrylic Display

SAR (Super Abrasion Resistant) acrylic sheets are produced by applying a hard, polysilicate coating to an acrylic substrate. This coating provides SAR with a surface that has 45 times the abrasion resistance of uncoated acrylic, making it an attractive material for applications that require the safety (e.g. windshields), optical (e.g. marine port holes) and aesthetic (e.g. sunroofs) qualities of acrylic along with a highly abrasion resistant surface coating. Super Abrasion Resistant acrylic sheets are available from Allplastics Engineering .
SAR offers clear advantages over standard acrylic sheet products. It consists of a high quality Perspex base product with a special coating, which provide abrasion resistance similar to the levels offered by glass. SAR also offers many advantages that are not offered by glass such as:

Cleanable: resists graffiti, chemicals and abrasion marking
5x impact resistance of glass
Safe: resists impact and shattering
Weatherable: retains properties long term
Lightweight: half the weight of glass
Available in clear; other colours and tints can be coated upon request
Significant chemical resistance
Better clarity (light transmission) than glass.
Can be fabricated and drilled on site using conventional woodworking tools such as routers and hole saws.

Light weight and fabrication flexibility cut installation costs: At half the weight of glass, SAR makes handling easier and safer, and installation is less costly and time consuming. It can be cut and fabricated at the installation site using power tools. SAR is suitable for replacement installations because it is readily fitted into existing frames.

SAR is available in clear 3mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm. Translucent, tints and solid colours can be coated with SAR upon request.

Optical Clarity: SAR in 30mm thickness transmits 93% white light, compared to 66% for an all polycarbonate sheet and 55% for bullet-resistant glass. Its edges are clear, avoiding the massive appearance of thick glass with its greenish tinted edge. These features add up to the clear, open look that is appealing.

Chemical Resistance: SAR surface coating is resistant to many chemicals. However, the edges of SAR are not coated. When using SAR for an application that will expose it to chemicals, one needs to seal the uncoated edges to prevent contact with the chemicals.

Weatherability: SAR acrylic sheet can withstand continuous exposure to sun and ultraviolet radiation. It offers clarity, strength, and light transmittance in combination with long term outdoor performance.

Thermal Properties: SAR acrylic sheet is a better thermal insulator than glass. The rate of heat transfer through glass is four times greater than that through acrylic sheet.

Thermoformability: SAR has limited formability. Design parameters are available from Allplastics Engineering. Moderate contours are often desirable and can be easily obtained without heating SAR sheet. Sheets can be snapped into curved channel supports, provided the radius of curative is in excess of 180 times the thickness of the sheet.

Individuals should not attempt to cold form SAR on sheets smaller than 600mm x 400mm because localised curvature to a radius <180 times would craze the coating. Either handling or thermal change of larger sheets may result in localised excessive curvature and coating failure.

When a speciality cast acrylic sheet becomes a standard, it is a mark of the very exacting nature of the manufacturing capability. Hesaglas is special, boasting a total of 200 different colours and tints all produced as thin as 0.3mm.
Not only are the sheets manufactured in tiny thicknesses but they are also produced to exacting tolerances typically 0.2/0.1mm which is useful for designers and original equipment manufacturers who themselves have to operate within strict thickness variations.

The special manufacturing technique enables this very thin cast acrylic sheet to have virtually no internal tension and also features a high molecular weight which makes the material particularly suited for routing and thermoforming. A cross linked variety called HT is available which is better suited for chemical and mechanical applications.

This very thin material is used in applications throughout industry but typically instrument windows, LED/LCD covers, front lenses, optical filters, architectural models and other precision applications where visual appearance is of fundamental importance.

The material is produced in a handy 800 x 800mm sheet size and with 4 different surface finishes ranging from shiny to strong matt.

In case you haven’t been bitten by this particular bug yet, here’s a quick intro. Laser cutters are an awesome tool in the modern DIY arsenal. This type of laser is a lot like a laser printer, but uses deep infrared carbon dioxide laser that can cut or engrave most plastics. You can find these at hacker spaces like NYC Resistor and membership shops like TechShop and The Sawdust Shop, so it’s finally getting to the point that almost anyone can learn to use one. However not everyone lives by a laser shop, so sites such as Ponoko, Pololu, and Big Blue Saw offer laser cutting services and enable you to submit jobs from anywhere.

Our bracelets are cut from a single sheet of acrylic (using a laser, obviously!) in concentric wavy rings to form a nesting set of various sizes. The light plays through the transparent acrylic in fun and fascinating ways.

Here’s what the set of bracelets look like nested together in their original configuration. The material is 1/4″ (6 mm) thick acrylic with a light-blue tint. The diameters of the individual bands span from kid size to oversize, so this does serve a practical purpose– no measuring required. The “gear” in the middle isn’t used for anything, but it’s pretty nifty anyway.

We also fabbed a set in clear “Arctic Ice” acrylic that is frosted on one side. (Also looks awesome, but transparent and hence harder to photograph!)

The really cool thing about using multiple materials is that the sets still nest neatly, allowing combinations of colors and textures for even more fun.
